My name is Arjan Driessen. I currently (nov. 2000) live in Delft, the Netherlands. I work at Delft Technnical University as a technician at the faculty of electronics, in the solar cell group. I maintain and improve thin layer characterization equipment, and I do experiments on solar cells.
As a kid, I was fascinated by electronic music. I owned an MSX home-computer, which was equipped with a 3-channel programmable sound generator. I wrote some MSX-BASIC programs to create my own sounds, and make music. It wasn't until 1993 before I welded my first real sound equipment: a so-called covox. It consisted of 20 resistors, a capacitor, and a parallel plug. I tried to make some kind of melodic techno with it, using Scream Tracker. In 1994 I bought a cheap soundcard. I started making serious garbage with the FM-synth and Cakewalk. At that time I was so frustrated about the results, that I bought myself a brand new AWE32 in 1995. As a result of that, there was a very productive period in which I made the worst music ever made on the planet. Then I discovered Rebirth RB338, which made me realize that everything I had made before was shit. I mixed the AWE wavetable sounds with Rebirth samples, which is really not a funny way to make music.
About 2 years ago, I discovered a very nice music program called "buzz". It's a new generation digital composer, based upon ancient trackers. The virtual machines (so-called 'generators' and 'effects') give the user incredible freedom in creating original sounds. The use of samples is also supported. Examples of Buzz Gear: all kinds of synths (including the legendary 303!), drum machines (including the legendary 909!), and effects, like filters, pitch-shifters, delays, chorus, reverb are all available, and still being implemented by a whole bunch of DSP wizards. With Buzz, the possibilities are truly endless.
